Internet telephony refers to communications - voice, fax, or voice-messaging applications - that are transported over a data network including the internet, rather than the public switched telephone network (PSTN). The basic steps involved in originating an SIP telephone call are conversion of the analog voice signal to digital format and compression/translation of the signal into internet protocol (IP) packets for transmission over the internet; the process is reversed at the receiving end.

You use your broadband by plugging in a SIP phone which converts the voice signal from your telephone into a digital signal that travels over the internet then converts it back at the other end so you can speak to anyone with a regular phone number. You can make long-distance calls at less expensive rates by removing some of the access charges required for use of the public telephone network. A user's physical location is irrelevant.

If you use a SIP phone it connects directly to your broadband connection and allows you to make telephone calls using the internet. The SIP phone converts the voice signal from the telephone into a digital signal that travels over the internet then converts it back at the other end so you can speak to anyone with a regular phone number. When placing a call using a SIP phone you'll hear a dial tone and dial just as you always have.
